Coptis chinensis Franch. is a perennial herb of the genus Coptis in the family Ranunculaceae. The leaves are long-petiolated, thinly leathery, ovate-pentagonal, heart-shaped at the base, all lobes are petiolate, the middle lobes are rhombic-ovate, deeply pinnate, and the small teeth have fine thorns; the bracts are narrow and long, pinnate-divided; the sepals are yellow-green, lanceolate, and the petals are linear-lanceolate; the fruit is oblong; it blooms from February to March and bears fruit from April to July.
Coptis chinensis is distributed in Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei, and southern Shaanxi in China. It likes cool, humid, and shaded areas, and avoids high temperatures and droughts; it is generally distributed in high mountainous areas and requires a natural environment with low temperatures and high air humidity; it cannot withstand strong sunlight and likes weak light, so it needs shade. Coptis chinensis has shallow roots and is suitable for loose and fertile topsoil with rich humus. It often lives in the shade of cold and humid mountains. It is mainly propagated by seeds, but it can also be propagated by division.
